Liberty National's Spring 2013 Agency Owner Meeting, at The Foxwoods Resort Casino, hosted representatives of our Closer to the Heart partner organization in Connecticut, Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. Fidelco's mission is to provide increased independence to the blind by providing them with the highest quality guide dogs. Fidelco breeds, raises, and trains German Shepherds, then gives them to recipients at no cost. However, it costs $45,000 and takes two years of training for one of these amazing dogs to perform the job it was bred to do. Liberty National President and CEO, Roger Smith, presented a donation of $14,040, which included partial matching funds from Torchmark Corporation. The funds were earmarked to help provide a guide dog to a blinded veteran.

Clean the World
During the November 2012 Agency Owner Meeting in Las Vegas, 80 Agency Owners, guests, and Home Office personnel rolled up their sleeves and got their hands clean with a Closer to the Heart project benefitting Clean the World. Founded in 2009, Clean the World's mission is to collect and recycle soap and shampoo products discarded daily by the hospitality industry and distribute these and other donated hygiene products to impoverished people to prevent the millions of deaths caused by hygiene-related illnesses every day. Liberty National volunteers worked in two-hour shifts at Clean the World's Las Vegas Recycling Operation Center, separating soaps and bottles into separate containers. Kevin Williams, the Center's director, said the time LNL spent volunteering saved the sparsely-employed facility six months worth of work! After the shifts, LNL President and CEO Roger Smith and Executive Vice President and Chief Agency Officer Steve DiChiaro presented Clean the World with a $4,450 donation.
In October 2012, the Liberty National Council of Champions meeting was held at the Monterey Plaza Hotel in Monterey, California. Liberty National’s Closer to the Heart partner was the Hope Center Food Pantry of Monterey County. The Hope Center assists ordinary working folks—the very families Liberty National serves—who have come upon hard times. Donations were collected from Council members, and President and CEO Roger Smith presented a $5,500 check to Hope Center Board members Michelle Russell and Maryanne Reynolds. Matching partial funds from Torchmark doubled the total of the donation. According to Russell and Reynolds, this was the largest single donation ever received by the Hope Center. Holly DiChiaro, wife of Executive Vice President and Chief Agency Owner Steve DiChiaro, organized a group of Council spouses and guests to respond to a critical need at the Center by purchasing and delivering more than $1,000 worth of disposable diapers for their storeroom. In addition, Council members and their spouses volunteered at the Hope Center’s semi-monthly distribution day, where they organized clothing donations, helped bag fresh produce, and distributed food and goods to an estimated 125 families in need.
Food For The Poor
In June 2012, Liberty National flew qualifying Agents and Managers to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, for Convention 2012. In the Dominican Republic, Closer to the Heart partnered with Food For The Poor, the largest international relief and development program in the United States. Food For The Poor helps children and the poorest of the poor by providing food, housing, healthcare, education, water projects, and emergency relief assistance. To combat the growing need for housing, Food For The Poor builds houses with solid walls, roofs that don’t leak, doors that lock, and floors that don’t turn to mud every time it rains. Donations enable families to move out of hazardous and unhealthy surroundings into new, secure homes.
